How to find a job in design, especially when you are young?

Finding a job in design is not easy, the offers are much rarer than in other sectors and the competition is fierce. So how do you get by when you want to find a job in the design sector and you are also young and have little experience? Here is our advice.

Design professions

When we talk about jobs in design, this covers a very wide range of possibilities and therefore of professions. We can thus find in the design employment sector 2D and 3D architects, interior designers, set designers, industrial designers, comic book artists, artistic directors, graphic designers, illustrators, model makers, art restorers, stylists or even web designers.

So, even if you are attracted to several of these branches, you should choose one and focus on it before you can diversify. It is better to have someone who specializes in one field than someone who touches a little bit of everything, but who will not be sufficiently qualified to meet a specific customer demand.

Be visible

When you decide to embark on a career with an artistic side like design, it is important to be visible. Indeed, when you apply for a job in design, the employer will most certainly want to know what the candidate is capable of despite their young age. Thus, being able to present a portfolio that reflects what you are capable of producing is sometimes much more important than the experiences on your CV.

To fill a portfolio, this involves responding to client requests, but if you haven’t had the opportunity to work yet, you can still find material. For example, you can put your most successful student achievements in your portfolio, but you can also challenge yourself and simulate a client request to complete a project from start to finish. You can also offer your services for free or at a low cost to get your hands dirty and fill your portfolio.

Choose the right status

Finding a job in design does not necessarily mean that you will be hired as an employee. Many people in the sector have opted for freelance status, which allows them to carry out several projects at once. It will then be necessary to think about these two options and to start the necessary steps before even doing your research to become a micro-entrepreneur and thus offer your services to people and companies
